Words

Tell me, does a poet write the words,
Or do the words just find the poet...
Animating us lifeless nerds,
While we never even know it?

If you forego a chance to write,
Might thought not just escape you...
To be found one not so distant night
Amid these forum posts which sate you?

I guess you'll just have to forgive
Such musing, and such ranting...
But I'd rather expulse than give
My muse excuse for decanting!

It's true, the words, they are alive,
(While we're just an instrument
Used to bring other hearts to thrive,
Or to wallow in their lament).

And so as I pick up this pen,
I know I'm just a bumbling fool
Been accredited by other men...
When, in truth, I'm not but a tool.

Michael Anderson

Did I waste it?
Not so much I couldn't taste it.

"Been accredited by other men..."
and women...

to the point where magnificent
far belies the bellow
of a poet who gives so much,
a quite wondrous fellow!

He thinks he speaks but to himself
when a world of poets follow
he belays his gift to a shelf,
and it hurts us when he wallows...

Yet, yet, what poet hasn't done
that very same self-expression?
All the greats, all the best! have
submitted to this transgression!

We hold our hands out to him
a vain endeavor, sometimes we're sure,
but if the hand we're holding out
may someday cause a cure,

then we're not in vain, this holding on,
this commingling with such a poet,
he needs to find this ladder, us...
and he surely needs to know it!

You do ponder over the word in a fascinating way, dear Michael.

The words seem to be all there somewhere like notes that yearn to be played. And every heart and mind chooses its own tune ... Fantastic.

This is very inspiring ... "hello words .... I am listening!"

We are the words, Michael. The words are us. I don't consider myself as a tool, I think of the relationship between words and me as a team. Also, experience is a vast building block and where words set and wait until the right time for you to use the. Tool? No, I can't subscribe to that. Teamwork? Yes, indeed.

Well crafted, my friend. Me, I feel like I'm a bystander watching them appear from whence I know not (not including the typing part)...

Enjoyed...

I want to thank each and everyone of you for your kind and uniquely perspective replies.

This was written after seeing a line I had rumbling around in my head a few days, that I did absolutely nothing with , appear almost word for word in someone else's poem here.  Kinda had me wondering, do we use words, or do they use us?

K., thank you for the lovely tribute... And I do "know" I am never alone here.

JP, We are the words... Indeed!

You know Michael... I've often thought of this theme.
There are times I feel as though I am only the vessel... where the pen takes on life and writes out its own words.
Enjoyed your words!

If you are capable of bringing forth exquisite thoughts through exquisite words, I think of you not as a tool, but a rich garden of summer flowers, which yoou are
