(Love Is) The Sweetest Hell

Well the buses and trucks fuel the nightly veins
staring at my reflection seems I'm drained of every living thing
pour another smokestack over coughing coal trains
and in the pores of my heartspeak there is a curious scarlet ring
shaped exactly like your body
my darling dear space oddity,
your lack of presence leaves no fangs on the city sky
but there's these mysterious holes left in the side of my soul tonight

Yes I'm doing just fine without you're daily eyes
seems that I can concentrate on the things I have to do
but sometimes inside there's a caged bird that cries
and it's in the devilish details of a loveless life I find that it's true
there's no time to dwell
on features I know so well
carved in the fire of memory filed away somewhere
in the back of my mind where love's brilliant sunlight never dares

So if it sounds like I'm not missing you, just look under all my stones
past the moss and grit of just living and dying close to the bone
you might decode the guardian words sayin' nothing at all
nothing to hide the scars and slowly healing bruises of the fall
and oh yes I fell
like a layer of dust on this skin
left untouched since I wish I could remember when
oh I fell
for another bitter kiss n' tell
and somebody told me love is the sweetest hell

Hey now the blues work like a southern star charm
oh sweat-pouring Carolina, your willows suit me like a dream
I'm gathering the storms to busy my vacancy arms
Sinatra he can't even smother a heartache wrapped in torn jeans
and the night scatters my soul
under a moon glass left half-full
half-empty an optimist would say to carpet my thorny path
but the holes in me have been empty ever since your final loving laugh

And if it looks like I'm ready to move on from you now, baby don't dare joke
in the salt-rubbed wounds I die to hide away under the blackest cloak
you can tell the cut of my walk that I'm threadbare at last call
slip into a dreamy landscape of denial dosed on smokes and alcohol
and oh yes if I yell
past your midnight garden gate tonight
any words passed between us will suffer what I write
please don't tell
me another bitter fare thee well
mmhmm sometimes it seems love is the sweetest hell

Waves...waves...
way too blue reality waves
they lap onto my bare freezing feet
dusty eyes scanning the palette of morning rays
instructions to a love life: lather, rinse and repeat
from this standing spot to the rest of the world
I'm imbibing a poet heart carved by a gypsy girl
lonesome guitar and travelin' shoes
I've got some news, I've got some blues
and a sketchy idea of some places to run to
yeah yeah...

Well the buses and trucks fuel the nightly veins
gas station light casts edgy shadows under my isolated form
memorizing my shoes seams like tracks of tiny trains
Sea Change on the headphones and I cradle myself to keep warm
absence of your fragrant body
my deeply adored space oddity,
your slack on all my ropes have left me to harsher tides
and there's very little in the way of pull left on my compass soul tonight

Yes you could say that I fell
for another bitter kiss n' tell, empty wishing well
you can tell
by the bold-faced lie of a fare thee well
that when they say love is the sweetest hell
well, sugar is my game,
n' baby, honey is my middle name.

Say... woman is the answering bell,
lust is a heaven too bitter to tell,
purgatory is another lover up for sale
and there's anthrax and dead flowers in the mail...

Yeah, yeah
I do believe, love is the sweetest hell.

Nice...I often wonder how much of our connection is love and how much is attachment, lust and desire...James

Phew!!!  It's not always easy to read you, you make my breath catch and my heart beat fast and faster.  Your poetry is all encompassing, your choice of words and raw emtions touch a nerve and leave me feeling deeply.

Love your work so much, soul drifter!
Don't you ever stop!
