Packrat

I fold the flaps, tape the box sealed…
‘Might need this stuff someday.
When I can rest, on all my life’s revealed –
When I can put it on display.

For now, I set it on the stack
Of memories packed up before.
With one last sigh, turn myself back
To that life, so hard to ignore.

A control freak with no control –
This world, far too demanding!
It bleeds the passion from my soul
Through endless reprimanding.

Pushes me toward what I can’t obtain,
With zero appreciation
Of what I actually have, or the pain
Of its slow annexation.

Still, I dream of those simple things
Unpolished men might never afford.
A house… a guitar with tunable strings…
A life not packed and stored.

So again, I mount that hamster wheel,
And run… and run… and run!
Never taking out time to feel,
Or for silly things like fun.

Yet, of those once envisioned dreams,
Very little has formed;
Through endless years, and countless screams
While life, about me, stormed…

As I folded flaps, and sealed with tape…
And carefully put each box away.
Reality’s cold slap now taking shape,
There will be no someday.

Did I waste it?
Not so much I couldn't taste it.

Don't be all that cocky and confident, Michael, about there not being a someday. Sounds like you are moving, either that or you are stashing a part of your life you don't think you need anymore. There was once a man who thought pretty much the same as the writer of this poem. This man never believed he would find happiness. He was wrong. It took him a very long time to discover some things that made him very happy, and he is maintaining that joyous feeling as we speak. Good luck to you, man.

MikeA - We all have those memories we've packed away and won't let go. They hold us and bind us and don't let us forget, after which we've even been known to put a bow on them so we'll know where they are in case of emergency. You hit home with this one MA and I liked it a lot. Namyh

Memories can't be packed away ,they live in
the deepest recesses of our mind, sleeping,
till called upon.
And we know not when they will be needed, like
the scent of a rose given to a stranger..recalled years later,,ah memories, made of life, love and laughter.
This is a wonderful poem, simply wonderful.
Very well done Michael.
Cheers
