HAY WAIN

The hay wain lay upturned upon the river bed
Wheels no longer turning, no horse between the shafts
Cool polished river pebbles where trout fry were bred
Through late summer corn fields a soft warm breeze just wafts

Does the thatch hold mem’ries, on cottage walls so pale
Tranquil blue skied summers, the cooling babbling stream
Shadows in the old inn and hops in golden ale
Blackened beams from winter’s smoke, lost within my dream

Cobbled stones where hooves did spark, in the early dawn
Milk pales and measured gills and apron fronts so white
Baking bread, the butcher’s bike, croquet on the lawn
The nightingale to sing, in tune with fading light

Constable sky in words, I try to colour true
Sunset’s shafts of gold, a promise for the morrow
The blossoming of pink, to frame the perfect blue
Surely then, tears will flow, like a stream in sorrow

You have painted for us a cobbled, lazy picture with your poetry of days gone by, and things discarded and of no use any more. Much like the human counterpart, we too become, after time, unusable for much of anything but to sit and wait. Nice work, Michael

Michael, Constable would be honoured and touched to be in your poem.  Your hay wain and his make a (I wanted to say formidable - but that word is so wrong for such beauty with memories in every brush/pen-stroke) captivating dream-wain of memories.  I was completely lost in your picture and still am.

What a wonderful picture you've painted... what a restful, pastoral feel you've left! Great write!
