piano bar was crowded that night
dark décor, tinkling cocktail glasses
and the piano player
an old man
been down some roads
leathered face and graceful fingers
I had been there before
as had most of the ones sitting around the piano
the man was a legend
an artist
a piano-playing fool
but it was his voice that brought us there
time and time again
and it was one particular song
his finalé for the night
every night
it brought women to tears
and sobs in the throats of the men
what made it so special
what made it so very, very special
was that when he sang the song
he sang it unaccompanied
by his piano
just a simple note
every so often, a quiet, somber note
to emphasize his words
the room began to hush its activity
for the piano man
was going to sing his finalé

Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
You in mid-air.
Send in the clowns.

Enjoyed  being there listening to him again, JP.

Yes indeed, Ms E. I used to love the piano bar, and thank you for stopping by to hear the music.

Thanks, Karen, the piano bar used to be quite the thing. I loved them, I'm sorry you never got to experience it.

Excellent setting Jerry.
Just like it is sometimes.
It was the piano man that got Billy Joel started as he sang about the characters that were regulars at the bar.

Great work!

I would have said that, Eric, if you hadn't beat me to it.

Thank you Eric. Yes, that was one hell of a song for Joel.

A lovely piece of work JerryPat2,
beautifully written, atmospheric, capturing perfectly what a Piano Bar is really like.
And the final four lines
"Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
You in mid-air.
Send in the clowns."
speaks to me so poignantly as that song is a personal favorite that never fails to move me to tears.
I look forward to reading more of your work.
Cheers

Ah, I could close my eyes and be there.  The piano is a magical instrument in the right hand... as you have obviously witnessed.  One of life's never too guilty pleasures I overindulge in every chance I get.  Beautifully done, Jer.

Appreciate the thoughts, Michael. Yes, the piano is an amazing invention. I was a piano bar freak from New York to California during my "lost" years.
