"Come to me" she whispered
on the wings of yesteryear.
"Come to me" it echoed
through his heart.
She shimmered there beckoning to the memories
he had locked away for safe keeping.
He moved toward her, his feet a mind of their own.
Without thought or conscience movement he reached for her,
His hand, cold, callused from toil
moved toward her cheek
The soft skin, like silk to his memory
drove him on to touch what he knew he could not have.
Yearning for the warmth, that once lived in those eyes.
"Come to me" she whispered as his hand passed through nothing
As a shiver moved from his fingers to the very soul of the man.
Falling to his knees, eyes to the floor
he reached for the whisp of her feet, blindly hoping
Knowing the truth of what he had done.
"Forgive me" he whispers
Into the stillness of the air.
She smiles down on to him, eyes empty
nothing more then a ghost of what she once was.
"Come to me" she whispers

I have had those moments and have said the "forgive me" words, Marilyn. We are complex creatures, humans are. Some of us forever and always tend to destroy what is good in our lives for whatever reason, and only later do we realize what we have done cannot be undone. I loved this tale of remorse.

Hauntingly heartbreaking... This aches, but does so beautifully!

This plays out daily all over the world.
