The Window Washer

There was a secretary working on the 34th floor
at her desk, in a chair, by the new boss's door.
She could work and polish nails with a snobbish delight,
type a letter, take dictation in the absence of light,
brew the coffee, answer phones, solve the problems that bind,
add some lipstick and perfume, arrange a meeting on time.

Outside her window, lightly beat the rain and freezing snow
on a window washer working on the 34th floor.
Up at dawn, pack a lunch, wife and kids are asleep.
Off to work, catch a train from the somber, silent street.
Check the gears, add some oil and it's up and up he'll go
to meet with Mr. Clean upon the 34th floor.

She writes a note and holds it up. He sees it at last.
His frozen fingers write one too and puts it up to glass.
Her's said "It's 72 degrees ! Come on in and take a chair."
His said "It's 50 bucks an hour mam, in freezing rain out here."

Just when you think your thinking is the only way that's true,
there's a window washer working with another point of view.

This made me smile all the way through.
Clever writing indeed with a light feel to it.
However, I think I'd take the offer and come in for a coffee but I suppose he'd have to go all the way back down and then up again.
I enjoyed this very much.

Eric – If you go for that coffee, it’s gonna cost you 50 bucks…but then again what doesn’t. LOL. Makes a poet proud that you smiled all the way thru this work, proving that my intent got thru and confirming that perception is always in the eye of the beholder. Thanks for enjoying very much Eric. Marilyn – We’ve often heard the expression “Don’t change horses in mid stream”. Well I did just that and guess what? I liked the second horse better which I never would have discovered had I stayed on the first. I know you’re right. There is indeed another point of view in every situation and I hope this helps as a reminder. Thanks Marilyn for stopping by. Namyh

Jerry – Ahh Shucks JP! You say the nicest things. They inject these old bones with a lubricating inspiration that makes them rattle just a little bit less. Now I know how the Tin Man felt. Thanks for the oil Jerry. Namyh

Startime – We can all use a laugh in each of our days. If this poetic work is responsible for putting one in yours, then I’m proud to be an author of giggles.  Now you’re startin’ to make me laugh. Thanks for the Bravo, for the love and especially for those hugs. Namyh

Different strokes for different folks...

I enjoyed reading this, too, remembering another lifetime when I was a secretary with a shorthand notebook, coiffed hair, and lipstick.  I used to wonder if anyone ever washed the windows on the 8th floor.  There must have been someone.  The windows were clean!  I traded that job in for a little house, a vanishing husband, and a baby, and ended up washing windows, too!

This is a fun read, and has a bit of a come hither feel hiding in the lines.

Klassy Lassy – Amazing it is how we take many roads in life and often end up doing what we only thought about not doing once long ago. Yet, if this injected some fun and a little ‘come hither’ in your day, no poet could ask for more. Now I guess I better go wash those windows like I said I would or my mate’s gonna kill me! Thanks KL for spending a spell. Namyh

ebonygirl – So glad this put a smile on ya. Now I got one. Namyh

suthern – If this work put some smiles in your day, then I’m proud to be an author who brings the grins. Thanks for being delighted. Namyh
