If

If I thought the world my playground,
Could you watch and not utter a sound?
Or, in your race of the swift and strong,
Would you slow down to teach me playing's wrong?

If you caught me talking to myself,
Could you leave what you heard on the shelf?
Or would you condemn schizophrenic duress,
To instead offer me loneliness?

If isolation I found comforting,
Could you leave me alone to sing?
Or would you preach to a mind been bent
Of better ways to circumvent?

If tolerance was actuality,
Well, wouldn't we all, then, be free?
But everyone has a better way
To inflict on you day after day.

And if machines were keeping me alive,
Would you still defend my right to thrive?
Or could you remove tubes, like chains, o'er me...
That truly I might be set free?

If, in silence, I passed away,
Would you even a word I say?
I've been pleading with you through my eyes,
If only you would realize.

Michael Anderson

Did I waste it?
Not so much I couldn't taste it.

A sad piece of poetry, Michael. I liked it, sad or otherwise.

This epitomizes powerful, poignant writing! It touched my heart through every line... then broke it with the last two. Fantastic work!!
