I walk down this road with a heavy load,
A lonesome place, with an unholy grace.
Ahead a graveyard stands, with rocks and sand,
A resting place 'tis said, among the dead.

I seek a bit of calm, a healing balm,
'Tis said the dead heals souls, and that's my goal.
I walk among the graves, trying to be brave,
But no succor do I feel, nothing to heal.

This ancient graveyard, calming grace is barred,
Bright moon shows my shadow, 'tis mine I know.
The moon seems to speak, saying all is bleak,
I feel so alone, something I must atone.

Here is where we came, 'ere fortune came to claim,
Thoughts of her fill my head, and this poem unread.
I want to speak aloud, but my head is bowed,
Better things left alone, among these ancient stones.

In this place blood was spilt, but not by guilt,
We spilt blood for our love, and morning doves.
Love died here as well, a lonesome death knell,
Why did I return, when 'twas here she spurred?

Welcome to Passions.  I like the dark tinge this poem carries.  Why do we return to the places of our spurnings?  I don;t know, but it seems we all do it.  Mayhap we're trying to disprove a reality that is simply to overbearing for us to face otherwise.  When that's where you are, the dead, indeed, are you best consolation.  Enjoyed your ponderings.

Scooter,

Welcome to Passions. As Michael shared,
one never knows why we keep picking at
scabs. Well, he said it better, but I
share this sense with you, and perhaps
it is because we wonder what would have
happened had we turned down "that" road
instead of "the other" road.

Well done. Please check your email for a
Very Special Greeting!

This reminds me of a graveyard I visited in Mexico.  The feelings.  Oh.  The graves' sand nearly blown away.  Caskets visible here and there.  All the sorrow of the past.  Thanks for bringing back this memory.

Hi Rosemary. Appreciate you stopping by and reading my poem. "All the sorrow of the past," you said, and you are absolutely correct.

"Why did I return, when 'twas here she spurred?"

Seems to me we often return places not yet resolved. For there, in that place, is much yet to learn. Otherwise we experience grief without growth and our pain has  no purpose.

Welcome to Pip. Enjoyed your write.

I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
