The Ledge

The litany sounds different here,
Up closer to the sky.
Oh yes, it's still my ill-timed thoughts,
Though most I let slip by.
The light in me, I see it clear,
Yet still with timid eye...
One this sill of forget-me-nots
Where hope seeks wings to fly.

I hold it now, within my grasp;
What I could not believe
When shadow over the dam
And left me lost to grieve—
All I allowed, with time's sweet lapse,
From my soul to be taken...
The heart, I know, of all I am—
Of all I had forsaken.

Step I slowly, close to the ledge—
Behold my road of ruin.
Too late to claim, even if true,
'Couldn't see what I was doin'.
While shame tells me, ever the wedge,
I'll never rise above it—
To let the blame just run me through,
And somehow learn to love it.

It's hard not to embrace such dark
Thoughts as they're calling to me.
I just pray God might grant me strength
To somehow find that new me.
A sky so blue, I set my mark,
And give one last test these wings...
Enough reward, reaching at length
For all that tomorrow brings.

Wonderful and gut-wrenching poetry, Michael. There is something new here though. A light. And a tentative vision of . . . tomorrow with hopes of what tomorrow brings.

Amen, my friend... amen. And please don't forget that you're not praying those prayers alone.
