Retribution

Somewhere under the rotting leaves,
Blackened by an early frost;
Alone, the forsaken heart greaves
Over a life been lost.
But the sacrifice of a pawn,
Albeit, born to be more;
Mournful echoes are sweetly drawn
Across the forest floor.

Though Time, kindly, will remove the
Stench of decayed devotion;
And all the memories of a
Man, lost to his emotion...
Betrayed by blood, the blurred edge of
Light once served as his guise...
A price well paid, if but for love,
Darkness now claims its prize.

As, without understanding a word,
The echoes of unexpressed
Longing will fade away, unheard,
But never be given rest.
Between the fear and the fantasy,
'Neath a canopy of branches;
And "might have been's" that will never be
For a man fresh out of chances...

The hawk's scream of frustration rises,
Past the legacy of fear;
And from shadow, slowly improvises
What none else could hold dear.
Supported only by a dream,
Weakest link in the chain;
For a moment, with both eyes a gleam,
Dares to see past the pain.

Climbing from the chasm, if but
To accommodate the change;
Still, seeing more clearly with eyes shut,
Tends to permanently estrange...
And, without option to acquiesce,
Not much remains but confusion.
Points made are all lost, more or less,
For you'll draw your own conclusion.

And, staring from a fragile frame,
A scarecrow drawing no notice...
Duly rewarded, will catch the blame
Upon his field, a plague of locusts.
One curve after another, his
To share the cause and woe for...
So appreciative the distant forest is,
For that heart buried neath its floor.

Now maybe it's just the price of
Lack of consideration,
Holding head high, no thought of love
To bring to commiseration.
As thrown into turmoil, you stand,
Watching your life's work atrophy.
Heart buried, finding yourself still damned
By the unerring memory.

Until, beholding your wasteland,
Your posture finally gives way...
The sight of all you held drinking the sand,
And slipping unto yesterday.
You arms, they sag; your eyes, they long,
But with no dreams left to harrow...
The distant forest yields its haunting song,
While living dead becomes your tomorrow.

Did I waste it?
Not so much I couldn't taste it.

I was in that forest smelling decay and rot with you, Michael. You are so fantastic with your descriptive phrases one would have to be in a comma to not let your words affect them. Another write from the depths of your soul, buddy. Keep 'em coming.

~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~

Ooooh, I like this, it paints a wonderful yet dark scene and I like how it flows. Enjoyed.

And "might have been's" that will never be
For a man fresh out of chances...

All too often, I forget to breathe when I read your words. They're that powerful, that gripping... And that reaction doesn't diminish as the words become familiar... each read reaches in and grabs my heart.

Knowing how this came to be just make it all the more impressive... If I had the grace to do so, I'd give a deep curtsey in homage to your talent. But being a klutz... I'll just applaud. *S* Wonderful work!

Startime1955,  Thank you, if from a tormented heart.

JP, I’m afraid you’ll have to give all the credit for the descriptive phrases in this one to southern…  She sends me challenges phrases all the time.  Sometimes I wait and use like 20 up all in one shot, just so I can sass her for not sending enough.  That was the case here.

s1nfully_1nn0c3nt, Thank you.  I’m glad you enjoyed.

Ruth, Lol… you actually found a phrase in there that I wrote.     See, I told you that you weren’t sending me enough phrases.   I am glad you enjoyed it.  Send more pls!

Each time I think I've found phrases that are diverse enough they can't possibly be worked into one poem, you prove me wrong... AGAIN! LOL Genius with pen, you are... I'm actually grateful that hatching egg is still feeling neglected. LOL

And you want more??? *G* Hmmm... I'll have to find my thinking cap. *G* You know I can't resist... those of us who can't build bonfires are honored to fetch kindling. LOL
