back home are my brothers
three siblings
sixteen years between myself
and the oldest of them
I roamed
from home
they stayed
we talk
on occasions, we talk
about who died
who's sick
who's in trouble
we speak of the weather
if it is hot we complain
when it turns cold
we grumble

what else do you say to strangers?

Delightfully tragic poem.
Glad you could get your feelings out.
I and my wife meet once a year with my brothers and their families at Christmas and talk about the great successes of their children, and the latest football predictions.
They don't believe in writing or reading poetry, because that's hippy stuff. A man should be raking his lawn or painting a fence
if he has spare time.
Oh well, may they live long and prosper.

Haha!  I hear you. My mother once told me to go get a job where I got dirty. I was working offshore on oil rigs and platforms as a cook at the time.

How sad that so many siblings tend to grow apart as they grow older, a time when they need each other's support the most.

I hear you, Ida, but it happens much more often than I had ever thought. Thank you for your input and for reading my poem.

*sigh* I know how you feel...I haven't seen my siblings since I was 16...20 years I had no idea where they were...when I talk with them it is clear they do not want to talk about our past and I don't know them so they are strangers to me...*sigh* sometimes life happens that way...*BIG HUGS*

*may our dreams ever be magical*

I'm sorry it's like that for you, Karen, but I'm finding this is true much more than I ever though it was. Thank you for being here.

JerryP - After confronting a similar situation, I later discovered that a stranger was just a relative I hadn't made friends with yet. I like this poetic expose. It has a Kodak moment of its own that I know. Namyh

Good morning, Namyh, and thank you for your interesting input. Sometimes these relatives aren't interesting in being friends. It is a bloody and complicated story on my part.

I can relate to this very well.  I have two younger brothers, 10 and 14 years younger to be exact.  It's hard at family functions to feel related when there's no real common ground.  We don't share the same childhood memories... we never were ther for each other in times of trouble, or felt the tinges of jealousy siblings often might when one excels at something where they didn't.

It's a gaping chasm, my friend, and bridges can't be built over night... They can only be built one day at a time, and hopefully with both parties aiding in the building.  I've managed it with one of my brothers so I know it can be done.  It wasn't easy though, but then we know nothing worthwhile ever is.  I do hope you make the effort.  The rewards have far outweighed the agony for me.

He he you hit the nail right on the head my friend.
We are a society of self indulgence and we lose some precious closeness because of it.

It's not that we are at odds with our siblings it's simply just life.

Yeah, you are probably right, Eric, it is just this mad world we have been deposited in. Thanks.
