The Exchange

Those gifts you left, for one bereft,
Ah yes, they fit quite well.
Tailor-made to grieve, I do believe
They make life living hell.
Silence, the first, and yes, the worst;
(With keen and cunning edge),
Has laid to waste those hopes I paced
To keep me 'top this ledge.

Still that photo I can't let go,
And hold on through thick and thin,
Daily tells me we’ll never be
More than a remember when.
And these scars on wrist, one last sobering twist –
Your nails, they left their mark...
When you thought to save me from the grave,
Then cast me to the dark.

And so I scour each dying hour
For a reason to go on...
For a will, long dead, for emotion, bled;
For vanity, so long ago, drawn.
Now from the Hall of Nothing Left, at all,
There comes this song for you.
Slightly off-key, but hey, it's me;
What more would you have me do?

My final gift, as the memories drift
Daily now, out of focus.
Still the pain plays sharp as that Aeolian harp,
Whose hopes never bespoke us.
So I'll sing, this way, forever and a day;
Or, at least until tomorrow...
Till sun no longer shines for a dawn still mine
To glimpse, if but through haze and sorrow.

Listening to every heart

Your poetry to me always affects me like having
to sing a patriotic song...I know the words
and value greatly the emotion, but can't get the words
past my throat for the silent strangle of deepest
respect, and utmost humility.

Off-key or not, sing the song and sing it loud. You may never  have that range of emotions again. Wishing you well.

Your nails, they left their mark...
When you thought to save me from the grave,
Then cast me to the dark.

The heart is a strange thing and not always our friend... It can look with longing at the very one who kicked it into pieces and caused such agony - often letting hope send it down the path to another kick.

But hearts also hear... even when ears are closed or complaining about discordance. *S* And with words like this, you need never worry about being off-key. *S*
