Listening to every heart

Do you know rain?

Is rain from above something that simply
spoiled your day of a planned picnic,
or a deluge that dampened your spirits
because for a brief time, the sun disappeared?

Did you wax the car and now, cannot show it off
for fear of spots?

Or is it more?

Do you see it as a washing of air,
clearing away smoke from eyes, or as
a last clinging to stems
before absorbed by earth,
as if it were a heavy tear
being pulled unwillingly
by gravity…

do you feel its weight in your heart?

Do you see the drops dance in puddles,
looking long and hard behind the romance of it all,
embracing this moment of quiet solitude,
turning to yours, saying,
“this is our moment of quiet”
as the tapping resonates upon the roof,
barely coming to your ear

beneath the morning sheets?

Do you know rain?

Do not see the drizzle as mere drops
that splash your windows after their washing,
but know that somewhere
an angel is crying for joy
as it welcomes home a soul.

Then, you will know rain.

We were blessed with some long awaited rain last evening - a great event given the draught conditions we've been in of late. I felt so blessed by it that I thought I would repost this. Thank you all for your indulgent reading.

I love the rain. Even the hard-pounding ones we get when thunderstorms travel through the area. I love it, it gives me a sense of being that nothing else has ever been able to compete with. Rain and I are friends, Karilea, and thank you for posting this, it was very well-written. I'm grateful you got some relief from the drought.

Some areas received up to two inches, Jerry. The farmers are pleased, and now there's a sense of well [although humid] - being in the air. Thank you for your indulgences.

Ah, I love the rain... not just watching or listening to it... walking through it, looking up at it, and feeling it on my face.  It's cleansing, indeed.  Glad you finally got a little there, K.  Hopefully you'll see more soon.

An angel, crying for joy... a lovey thought, Sunshine,
I can hear a gentle voice speak these words. I will now know the rain differently because of your poem.
Thank you, ms. e

I grew up in the Northwest so I'm used to rain and I'll take rain over drought any day. Your poem reminded me of how much I love a gentle rain.

Sunshine - There's nothing like that first breath of oxygen after a torrential rain scrubs the air of a big city's contaminants. It's like getting a change of pampers in preparation for the next downpour.LOL. I hadn't thought about that for a long, long time. Thanks for poetically spotlighting that memory with sunshine, Sunshine. It's a parade and I won't rain on it. Very Nice work. Namyh

Your picture is a scratch-and-sniff.  It smells like rain.  I love soft rain and hard rain.  I am not fond of weepy rain.

Love this, Ms K.

Michael, I'm so very glad I have a grandson that carries your name; so glad you know the cleansing...

Karen...sometimes reposts are good things, yes?

Ms E...I like your style. Thank you....

Ida, CA never had this kind of drought in my area because we were close to the ocean and the fogs' damp always kept the roses climbing...so I treasure when my roses here, in Kansas, get a drop of wet....thank you!

Namyh, what a delightful name you have. Thank you so very much not for reading only this poem but for leaving responses on so many others. I treasure your eyes, and your thoughts. Thank you so very much!

Ali my girl...thank you. It was a good photo, wasn't it? Never thought of it as a scratch-and-sniff but love the analogy of it! I akin weepy rain to crying women....and I've seen weepy rain far too much in the real to know exactly what you are referring to. Bless you, my dear friend.

This is a beauty.
Rain as one should see it, and appreciate the wonders of it's importance and romance.

Wonderful work Karilea but then we know that's what always comes from your pen.

Gene Kelly's famous,
"Singing In The Rain"
came to my mind.

Take care

Eric

I grew up in a house with a tin roof... and even now, after learning fear of rain and the wind it runs with down here, can soothe myself by imagining the sounds of rain falling on that roof. *S*

This is so lovely, Sunshine!

Wonderful! And yes, yes to all...
We received about 2 inches in the last 24 hours; it came in bands, almost like a tropical storm does... and lots of thunder-bumpers too!!  Was awesome ... then read this.

Awesome too!

Thank you, Paul. Yep, pretty much my writing is gentle...a baby's touch.

Eric, you sense rain as I do...but I must disagree...not every work that's written is good...even I know that. And we can all be inspired by such greats as Gene!

Prasad, you must bring your bride to the states some day, or even to Europe, and experience "rain". But better yet, to the states, where you can experience "thunder storms!" Thank you!

Tin roofs are LOUD in the rain, Ruth. But when the gentle, the rain can lull one to sleep...a sound to be treasured...for sure. Thank you!

James...we had that very same kind of band rain storm on Wednesday as well...I loved it! Thank you for sharing it with me.

Sunshine, enjoy the rain!  I see much more rain than the sunshine here, so there are weeks during the six months of winter that I crave blue sky, but I often take note of the silver spangles that form concentric ripples down the court where I live and rain keeps the grasses growing all year long in myriad shades of green.   At times, a moment of sun will cast newborn lime into the blades.  I watch the gold behind rainbows some afternoons when the light is right and golden shafts occasionally piercing the dark rain clouds over the ocean in early spring. Then the blue comes and the lakes are jeweled necklaces at the throat of the mountains and the wild rhododenron blush in heady pinks, sparkling still from the rain.... The Scotch broom captures gold in the hills and I feel the radiance of nature breathe life.  Sometimes she smiles, sometimes she weeps, sometimes she blooms and sometimes, she sleeps.  Sometimes, she throw tantrums, and I know how small I am, but she is always profound.  So is your poem.  Entirely eloquent and lovely.

I must have missed this before...but Rainy Days and Mondays are always my favorite days and push my creative buttons.

Sorry about the drought out west. We have been very lucky in the mideast, having a variety of weather to enjoy.
