you would not know I was here
my face is everyman's face
my breath lingers in dark toilets
as you pull the long string for light

my eyes are oval and cold
as eyes on old men's oil-on-canvass
somehow just off center a tad
not noticeable in the dark

loitering near the corner
a cipher to the passerby's
I can stand there for hours
pigeons eye me suspiciously

but not you in the evenings shade
I stand mottled by the half sun
the day is becoming darker
I blend in like another shadow

I never speak, even when spoken to
by passersby's passing the time of day
they turn up their collars and hurry on
something tells them to not look back

who am I, have you already guessed
names mean next to nothing in my world
I'm the man nobody sees
but feels a presence when they pass by

I'm a hired killer, waiting for my mark
that's why I stand here for so long
as if I've missed my ride
I'm like a piece of household furniture

I'm here at the corner where you walk
each afternoon - they can set a clock by you
you make a left at the next block
don't bet on making that left turn today

I am sorry, Karen, that it grossed you out. Well, actually you didn't use those words. I do different kinds of poetry. Life is not all peaches and cream. I have calmed down my writing, or you would really have something complain about. Thank you for being here anyway, even though the subject was not to your liking.

Man's greatest enemy that still plagues all those left behind.

This is superb writing, fascinating subconscious awareness! Yep, it's a reality that none can avoid.
You are very good at this type of writing as I have mentioned before.

Appreciate your comments, Eric.  You are so right, the ones left behind live with that horrendous act the rest of their lives.

A scene that could fit perfectly well into any thriller, Jerry! Suspense is there and fear creeps along the lines ... wheewww!

Ok, my intuition tells me that tomorrow I'll change my route ...

Very impressive.

You are wise in making that decision, Margherita. Thanks for taking the fear factor with me.

I like mystery novels. This poem reads like the introduction of a good mystery novel.

Come to think about it, it does sound like the beginning of a mystery/thriller, Ms. E. You may have lit a fire. I'm working on a novel at the present, and have another one waiting in the wings, but this idea is a good one and just may replace it. Thank you dearly for your input.
