* * *

I tried to make a list of stuff--
how you came through when times were rough.
The presents which you gave to me,
with so much thought, yet casually.

I hated when you'd go to school.
but learned to tell the time that way--
I'd watched the hands and wish they'd move
faster, wishing days away
After noon meant you'd come home
and tell me tales of the uknown.

"When the big hand holds the small"
Dad taught me that meant noon began--
I was so sad when you were gone.
I tried to sing the songs we sang.

It didn't feel right without you.

I tried to color without you,
but could not tell my greens from blue--
for I was born with sickly eyes,
and could not tell yellow from white.

Always,I relied on you.
"Nope--that's green, this one is blue."
You helped me with so many things...
like how to make a bow from string.

You taught me how to tie my shoes,
so patiently, "just make a loop,
then just wind the other through--
"You did it! See, I know that you
can do almost anything!"

Remember how we used to sing
while drawing pictures in the hall?
Ballerinas lean and tall.
long necks, and tutu elegance
You told me stories of events
and we played "Truth or Consequence"
and games of "Battle" with the cards.

You taught me how to cross the street,
and held my hand 'til I could see
after I had surgery, I was surprised
with two good eyes--you'd drawn pictures
just for me...

"Karen's home--YAY--Kay Kay's HOME!"
I remember perfectly.
You made a fist protectively
while other kids would laugh at me.
I had to wear that patch and we
watched that show called "Doctari"
Again, you were encouraging:
"You are a lion, Kay...okay?"
And I would end up giggling
'til happy tears rolled down my cheeks.
"Clarence, he is just like you.
you're so lucky? You get TWO
when other people see just one,
you see double--twice the fun!"

With no you? There'd be no me.
My gem and I--two hearts--one beat.
"When the big hand holds the small..."
(I never did grow very tall)

Just one last thing I have to say--
that is how I learned to pray.
Two hands together, every day:
"Dear God, please keep my sister safe."

Happy Birthday, to Twisted Sister 2

I hope she does, I hope she knows--I just had to zoom over there to leave her a gift. (Which is..wrapped, and I so seldom wrap my gifts, and she will make note of that, I am sure.)

I hope I spoke for little sisters, everywhere. I would hope all little sisters can say the same of their big sisters. But I am very lucky.

I love her very much. Thank you, Karen, for reading.

This is enchanting and besides that it is just downright cute. I love this beautiful side of you, Karen, I truly do. Damn, you put a lump in my throat.

This brought tears to my eyes... I'm a big sister... whose sometimes-nuisance-little-sister grew up to be my best friend. *S* I hope she (like you) remembers the good and forgives the rest.  *S*

Beautiful write!!
