As tiny as my mother's tear
the answer was a tiny seed
that had to grow inside of me
for one half of a century
my pain no fault of hers but she
was staggered by the guilt of me
inconsolable
till now...and we
are fortunate to  be at peace
freed from fault and history--
I pray it's not too late as we
celebrate my tottering
baby steps at last...

an understandable confusion of perceptions as reality...and yes, Jerry, I do feel very fortunate.

As a mother, I can't imagine the pain my mother felt with me being such a fussy and chronically ill baby, and as a mother I know how hard it would be to not take that personally.

She loved me anyway.

Thanks for reading. *hugs*

jo? It's for my Mom. With all the tests being done on me, among the things that were discovered was a very simple and common congenital birth defect--a transitional disc--an extra vertabra at the end of my spine.

Normally this would fuse--mine didn't. But I was told by the doc it's no big deal for an adult--it can pop in and out of place--I was told that most of the pain is felt by infants and their mothers.

My mother always felt like she wasn't adequate because she couldn't comfort me. Even had there been a way to diagnose this sort of thing, it's still considered inconsequential, although it's painful. Little babies have literal growing pains, which are usually self-corrected when they learn to walk.

So there ya go--two poems explained in one "thank you".

(And btw? I found it very amusing to discover that this 'defect' is also very common in German Shepherd dogs...)

I knew I put the "itch" in something--I just didn't know it started with a "B"!

Well...as I tell myself when I get up most mornings, "What the hell, it's only pain."

I've only been screaming my whole life.

Still...that is fifty years too much.

And really, it's fine, but for my Mom to think it was her fault? I can't have that. I won't have that.
