This life road I've been following
I think I'll double back
I've been on this road too long
I'll change course
Return to some familiar places
Oh, I see a change in the elements
As I about-face
To return to past days
But I was a child then
Today I'm a man
Still . . . Back to childhood I go
In a man's body
Everything has gone creepy to me
Faces from the past
Don't resemble each other
And they have
Each and everyone
Donned clowns masks
And baggy pin-stripped pants
With a yellow flower in their lapels
Squirting psychedelic water at me
And they're
Again . . . As they used to
One and all
Laughing heinously
Pointing accusatory fingers at me

Very impressive, Jerry. Every now and then we plunge into the past and face those events again, our emotions still strong. You express this powerfully. It should be possible to dismiss these experiences, as they have no right or reason to still disturb us in our present life, but it is not easy, I know.

That poor hurt child you once were still whispers in you ear. I'm glad that "they"
are the clowns now. And I wonder if that finger they are pointing is at your happiness now.  Miserable people envy the happiness of others. In that regard your past would detest your present happiness... and try to tell you you still don't deserve it. Don't listen my friend.

Thank you, Margherita. Yes, it is difficult to traverse backward, and I wonder why I bother. It's just like an itch you can barely reach to scratch, it drives you crazy. Thank you for being here.

Lori, my friend, you have absolutely hit upon it. I am happy, wonderfully happy, which is something "they" would not want to see. And no, a thousand times no, will I ever forget it, as if I ever could.

HEY!  I think we grew up in the same neighborhood.  First thing I thought of was that old song:
"Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you"

Enjoyed "The Road Back"

I have to say you're a master at creating potent exposing images out of negative situations be they dreamlike or in actuality.
Great writing my friend.

JP, you write of the past vividly...
but you live the present joyfully.
Well done, my friend.

You are a sweet person, Ms. E, and always have good things to say when you visit my part of the blue room. Thank you.

I've also been going back to the past quite a lot and, yes, it is an itch one cannot reach.  I don't think, however, that going back is a conscious act but there certainly is a need to do so either to gain clarity or just to feel the feelings again.  Maybe it's an age thing?

Aw, there's no doubt that it is an age thing, Helen, for when we get to a certain age looking ahead is just too dismal. Thank you for you input on my poem, friend.
