Blasted bird, and again I didn't win last night.

a tattered, one-eyed crow cawed at me
sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard
the damndable thing
one of its winds had been damaged
probably by the same thing
that took off two of its claws
it hopped miserably
upon the porch where I was sitting
cawed again
pointed its beak at the Powerball ticket in my hand
mocking it with a cocked head
could almost hear it saying
Powerball, ya gotta be kidding, ya gotta be kidding
I waved it away
it tried to fly with that crippled wing
most pitiful thing I've ever seen
still . . .
it made the lowest branch of the oak tree
squawking all the while
this was not the first time he'd ridiculed
my Powerball ticket
how you think he got all crippled
I did it
proud of it
arrogant, miserable excuse for the bird species
every Wednesday and Saturday
it makes a spectacle of itself
mocking me
my chance to win a fortune
I shake my fist toward the ghoulish bird
and clutched
my soon-to-be-fortune in my other hand

Can't win if you don't play my friend. I'm still waiting for my jackpot.
