If Only

If only I could understand
This knotted indifference at hand…
You lie stock-still, looking away,
Again as we start the new day.

A day I greet with listless sigh,
If but to bid the dream goodbye.
The only place your smile lingers,
Till pried from mind with cold dead fingers…

Of obligation, rising firm
To squish us as we writhe and squirm…
As Destiny slowly peels the guise,
To show us a mirror full of lies.

Still, ambiguity clouds our vision,
…Till reality ‘comes indecision.
…Till indecision carves up trust,
And all that we’re left with is dust.

A dust that settles on the graves
Of we, who live, emotion’s slaves…
Wandering through life, hand-in-hand
On to the penchant of the damned!

Yes, hand-in-hand, somehow still lonely;
Never quite heart-to-heart… if only.

This one captured my heart, buddy. You cried out for every lovelorn person in the world. I still maintain that you are in a hundred-miles-per-hour race to catch Edgar Allen and maybe even surpass him on the plateau of broken hearts and sad memories.

*sigh* your words pull at the heart...it is great writing when emotions are touched...

*may our dreams ever be magical*

This is so powerful, dear Michael, it holds sad truth and is written with your usual touch of excellence.

"Never quite heart-to-heart… if only."

Ouch, this makes the heart heavy with grief.
So much insight in your words, my friend.

If only ... understanding
Were as gently wrought as your fine write
I wonder if we would appreciate
life so much. Hugs....

You never fail to wring emotion out of your words...this one hurts because it 'feels' so real.

What a perfect blend of incredible poetry and heartbreak... each line makes me reach for bandaids, even knowing they're woefully inadequate. Excellent write!
