Polar White

So gleaming white her fur, her pads upon the flow
Her cubs now weaned and gone, she taught them all they know
Below a breathing hole, a seal comes up for air
Her forepaw reaches down, the seal can only stare
She wonders at the Sun, this Arctic summer day
The warmth that creates life, but melts the ice away
Soon driven to the shore, where food's so hard to find
And do we really care, and are we so unkind
And watch her as she swims, the never ending sea
Her head above the waves, magnificent is she
And soon will come the day, no paw prints on the snow
And perhaps upon your bed a faux fur quilt you'll throw
The setting of the Sun, and Arctic winds to moan
Now too late to care, no longer will she roam.

Just saw a special on polar bears and it it getting rough for them, what with the ice melting etc. Very well done.

Your writing always brings to mind such vivid visions...such a sad truth in these words...

Sad what man has done to the planet.
Fossil fuels and the internal combustion engines, the factories etc.

Actually the polar bear's fur is transparent but picks up the color.
This is one of the most fierce animals on the planet but also one of the most beautiful.

Good poem and you make very good points.
