Before I retired I used to work on the local golf course that had four very old barns and this poem was inspired by one barn in particular where we used to have our breaks and lunch.

Old Suffolk barn
rustic, ragged
weather-beaten forts
with twisting,  beamed interiors
and cloudy red rooftops
over silk thread nets
in dark corners
and hungry spiders with twitchy legs
feeling for their lunch. .

Mice, scout in hidden holes
for fragments of food,
darting,  in and out
of crumbled bricks
performing circus acts
on dried out sticks,
brought in  by the farmer’s dog.

Tucked away, above,
on a jointed  beam,
a mud house
of twittering swallows,
and parents swooping in
with beaks full of flies.

Chicks squabbling,
screeching,
gobbling,
growing,
ready to fly.

The barn , now quiet,
but not quite empty;
spiders and mice
are still busy

Ah, makes me think of my grandparents old red barn where I used to chase outlaws and redskins in my fertile imagination.

We played Cowboys and Indians in England, but kiddies don't do that anymore. Thanks for reading.

Cool, my friend ... didn't have any barns in my area (So. La. around Jerry's territory), but we did play a lot of cowboys and indians and I used the garage for a barn and would leap off the roof and de-horse the redskins!!

Still have scars on my knees (all short pants back then - cheaper) where I missed my mark!

good memory provoker!!

You bring the vision to life and take your reader with you...I love it and the vision it invokes...
