time is ephemeral, not on my side
in the night closing in
sometimes I look
into death's gruesome, silent face
and wonder
have I lived long enough
blindly though it was
I become hot-tempered
unwilling to accept the nefarious
embers as my life smoldered
among the ashes
of life not so well spent
still . . .
I shan't complain
or . . .
endeavor to countervail yesteryear's
street-level hauteur
I may have defrauded life
you know
by living this long
more times than I can remember
I bad-eyed the River Styx
walked away grinning
ah, yeah, my life
is scorched and nearly burnt out
doctors are the firemen
trying to anticipate death's grip
one thing
if I have learned just one thing
through the year's
accumulated lessons
may be only this . . .
we are easily friable

Looks like we were on a similar road this morning
Hope it is not the road to hell

Hah! I don't think so, Michael, I think it is just a road to nothing. Thanks for the read and comment.

Hey JP,
They say we get to do it all over again if we haven't learned our lessons well ... and with the same people,  only dressed in different costumes.

I'd like to add, maybe next time we'll come back as angels in human skin just because we've put in our time now. I believe in Angels!

Oh, neither am I in a hurry to find out, J, but don't care to drool my life away either. Thanks for being here.

Ah, ms. e, reincarnation is a possibility of course. Everything is up for grabs because we . . . just . . . do . . . not . . . know, do we? Thank you for you input.

Friable, oh yes! But, if we can avoid the doctors (not always maybe!) we most certainly have a greater chance to live longer. And making the best of our time is one of the secrets to keep up with the daily lessons ...

You are a prolific writer and as long as you have your poem and novel projects going you will stick around, because your ideas vivify your life.

Great job, Jerry!

You are an astute observer of life and those of us that live it, Margherita. You are quite right about my poems and novels ideas verifying my life. Without either of them I would wilt away. Thank you for your comments.
