Another One Is Gone

More and more
I find myself relating
to my father; my wife's father;
because I remember both saying,
" every time I look up . . .
- Another one is gone . . ."

In the heart beats
of the days
that make up the last few years . . .
I've lost too many,
and now, I've lost another -
relative, friend, lover . . . soul,
with which I've measured
my life.

And my heart beats slowly,
my breath comes shallow,
and I touch the place on my chest
where the ache is more
than the loss of a relative,
a friend,
a lover, or a soul,
because with every passing . . .
I am less than I was before.

My heart beats slowly.
My breath comes shallow.
I touch the place on my chest,
where my soul
withers in pain;

another one . . . is gone.

I hear you, man. I'm sitting here sippin a little red and counting those I graduated with and there are not many of us left. I'm hanging in because I'm too ugly and ornery to kick the buck and give everybody the satisfaction and onerousness to say I've bit the dust and they are still breathing the polluted air.  Anyway, I refuse to go out anytime soon. Gotta win Powerball first, don't ja know?

This season, in one's life, with the
losses experienced, must be difficult.
Your poem inspires me to appreciate those with
whom I share my life right now.
I am sorry for your loss.

Dear Jimmy, I am sorry for your loss. You expressed the sadness so well. I agree with your ponderings. Indeed while aging such sad news seems to hit us at an accelerated pace ...

Love and peace.

James, that's true, living or dead and this piece can easily be converted to loss love also.

Ms. E...

Cultivating and nurturing friendships never becomes more important than when you're young.
Not that one has to make everyone they meet their lifelong friend, and not that every friend in later years is a lifelong one - but it seems thefriends I am losing are those of numerous years.

And I, being such a "loner", don't have that many in the first place. So each lost is truly a "loss".

How beautiful friendship is, and the comfort of their tangible kindness and heart is sorely missed.  I can't say how bereft it leaves us who are still here any better than you do in this poignant poem.  It's good the memories are fond.  I am sorry about your friend.   Karen

Oh, I feel this one.  It echoes my thoughts sometimes.  It seems like my life gets narrower with every passing.
