at the oyster bar, on the pier
the boats float up lazy-like; the
slow bob and weave, lapping the sides like a metronome
bodies boiling out of them like ants.
a busy little parade of soft bronze, flesh shiny
with sweat and cocoa butter.
the boys posture and preen, like the peacock.
flashes of color and strut - they are beautiful
until the insecurity shines in their eyes, fierce and fragile;
and then they are merely humans, and i am relieved,
St. Augustine has more than its fair share of ghosts.

we stroll along St. George street
laughing and jostling, we are all friends here.
her arm over his shoulder, absentmindedly twirling
one of my curls
our friends are there, and there,
and we all look around us at the heavy hum
of life and smell and color
floating on salt water air.
when we lean forward to speak, her
cheek brushes mine;
i can smell her breath and it is
like caramel and something else slightly sweet,
like the gelatto we all had earlier
and i wonder if mine smells the same.

Great imagery, Nicole. I put myself there with you and your breathing in your face friend and smelled your breath. Yes, it had that same lovely smell.

I am never dissapointed when I open a Nicole poem..

"they are beautiful
until the insecurity shines in their eyes, fierce and fragile¨

I know that look, displayed it many times when I was young.

"absentmindedly twirling
one of my curls¨
A perfectly placed line.

I like it when a poem not only takes me away from where I am,
But also adds the sensation of scent, color, and atmosphere to the place it has taken me.

All of your poems do that, that's why I read them.

St George sounds magically entertaining on a warm day, and there is something about being near the water that is like no other place to spend the day.  It's reflective qualities are so perfect for the poem that grows within and there is a sense of tranquility unconfinement.  To share it with friends is a memory in the making... and lovely.  I, too, love the way you write the imagery, so I am there, too.     Beautiful.
