Flip Side of Love

I hurt women
when I told them
I didn't love them.
What was I supposed
to do, lie to them,
telling them words
that weren't true.

Yes. They expected the lie.

I believe I would rather be hurt by the truth, than deceived by a lie if it were my choice - but I do know a lot of people who need the deception.

Perhaps in this one it's a question of timing.  If one "takes all" before telling the truth then hurt is the natural outcome and we must be duly chastised.

No...  But you can be more up-front
at the beginning of your relationship.
You can't just move your lips, you gotta speak
plainly...

Been there, done that, my friend (and also been the receiver of such words (one, while appreciating the honesty at a later day, was practically devastating and totally unexpected).

Honesty, while sometimes painful, especially when it comes to the heart, is, in the end, the least hurtful. And the words I love you though terribly abused, should never be the means to an end.  That's always been My philosophy.

You did the right thing.

hello james, we can't love everybody, that is a good point, perhaps it was not a lie to tell i love you, our consciousness has sometimes limits and we can't control feelings, fearing is not lying i guess, sorry for the mixed thoughts, appreciated the beauty of the poem,

regards
