huge moss-covered oak trees
tales of voodoo
pirate ships in out-of-the-way harbors
sleepy, warm southern winds
brings to mind exotic isles
as my thoughts wander among times past
the delight-soaked nights
with images instilled so sharply
I see and hear
the creaking of the wooden ships
as they make their way
to the new world
with a ho-ho-hum and a bottle of rum
easing into the port of New Orleans
history will not be kind
for these rum-soaked ships
carry not just rum in their hulls
but human cargo
to be auctioned off to the highest bidder

This part of history will never be forgotten.
Saddly, it continues to this day throughout the world against those who are defenseless.
Good write my friend, ms. e

You are correct that it is still going on, I fear it will never stop. It is as you say, those who are defenseless are the victims of these tragedies. Thank you, ms. e for being here.

"human cargo
to be auctioned off to the highest bidder"

Heartbreaking, but so true.
Needs to be stopped, at all costs.

Never will, though, JL. As long as there are people who live in fear, and those who cause that fear, there will be tragedy in the making.

Appreciate your thoughts,man.

Well written, my friend, and, above and beyond, the shame of it is, most of it has been physically obliterated from New Orleans ... much could have been gained by keeping the history so the future could "see" how gross it really was, not just listen to the telling and cries about that section of our past.  An injustice to both the living and those that are gone.

In visits to New Orleans over the last quarter-century (it is my home, and I'm old enough to know what was there) I'm just flabbergasted at what has been destroyed, rather than cultivated and used to foster the understanding of the misery that existed.

anyway...

enjoyed your write...

Yeah, you have touched on the fact that New Orleans has lost its culture before, j., and I agree with you. I wasn't born there, but I first hit the city on a senior trip in 1957 and fell in love with the crazy place immediately. I come from a very small town in Arkansas, population 700 more and less) and what I saw completely overwhelmed me. Never mind the food. All the different kinds of food was another grand discovery. Anyway, I kept coming back to the city and from what I recall from those early days to the present, you're correct, the city has completely lost whatever charm. Never mind that the past seems to be something the city never had, except anything which pertains to the tourist trade, i.e.,Mardi Gras and "show yer ____! I hate the place now. I live about sixty miles from it in Thibodaux, and never go back.

Thanks for showin gup here.
