.

Duck and cover
Until it was over
The mushroom dying
Before you would

Mosquitoes
On Broadway Avenue
For all the murderous fog
It was us versus them
Though few of us understood

Long frightened lines
For polio shots   The occasional
Funeral for someone you didn’t know
Though your parents did

That and other nondescript things
Were what the Fifties were
Childhood was more frightening then
And now here we are

About to go
And how are you
This side of then

Too young to remember
Or think of growing old

Outstanding!
I am upstanding,
and applauding.
