In every heart there lives a need-
To hear, to be, to do-
I think I know what drives me on
I wonder friend do you?

I need to hear the wild geese cry-
The lonely timber wolves-
The mustangs ranging free and wide
The thunder of their hooves.

I need to feel the trade winds blow
A ladies sweet caress-
Upon the face of wanderers-
Which will not let them rest.

I need to see a bloody sun
Descend into the sea-
And lie beneath a starry sky
Which seems to beckon me.

If you can track a timber wolf
Upon a rocky crest-
Perhaps you'll find the path I leave-
As I am heading west.

If you can chart the wild goose' path
Or map the Ocean streams-
Perhaps indeed you'd follow me-
To conquests in my dreams

If you may know the pachyderm
And where his bones might lie?
Perhaps in time you'll know in fact
The place I'll go to die.

I want no pomp, nor floral sprays
When I lay down to rest-
I want to die with gun in hand
And facing t'ward the west.

That my last sight before I die
Would be the setting sun-
Perhaps I'll hear the nighthawk cry
"At last his race is run."

It is a wise man who knows the difference between wants and needs... and does his best to satisfy the latter, whereever his paths might lead. This is a delight, GS!

"Perhaps I'll hear the nighthawk cry
"At last his race is run.""

Your poetry is just getting better and better.
This is one of your best.
Love that ending!

Sounds like a proper end of a cowboy's journey to me.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this, John.  I was going to say that I wish I had written it - but on deeper thought, I am glad that YOU did.  It is SO you and it is SO me to wrap myself in it.  This belongs in the annals of the classics.  As I read - and re-read - it, my wish is that as many people as possible should read it to open their eyes to what really matters.
