Either/Or

Bird on a traffic light
can he see the colors changing?
Or do they fade to grey with the night
and is this a metaphor for me?
Or am I reading too much
in the vacuum absence of touch
200 miles from sanity
but just a hair's length from hell
a friend from an enemy
sometimes I can't even tell
and I can barely see
you coming back into me

I don't think I can handle this now
the clumsy idea that you cared somehow
so till the lie turns to truth,
I'll sit here, memorizing the floor
in the ancient ruins of my youth
I'll keep an eye on the door
oh what for
it's either that or...

Water drops on the sky
can you be bluer than me now?
Or don't you see reflected in my eyes
this burden of a soul-shaped cloud
or simply just a rainy reign
over all the misty November pain
I've crawled over carcasses
of cracked or shattered epic love
to face my eternal nemesis
something I can't get enough of
and I can hardly tell
hello from fare-thee-well

I don't think I'll get over you now
this stupid heart is singing out loud
all that I can't ever say to you
just sit here and disguise the sore
that is destined to scar to blue
I'll keep a thread of you for...
oh what for
it's either you or...

All the pain money can buy
all the paint will someday dry
on the lipstick traces I refuse to let die
on the surface of me
it's all I want to see
it's all I want you to see of me

Bird on a traffic light
and my hopes are turning red
but I won't fade to grey tonight
yeah I will hinge on all you said
and somewhere back there
I stopped keeping score
somewhere in the scent of your hair
I found something to adore
but now everything's either/or
fish or cut bait
surrender to the twists of fate
the ebb and flow of heart
it's either surrender at the start
or die to win you
it's all I can do
it's all I can do to prove
to you that I can move
yeah I can move this body too
just you watch me

so can relate to this!

Love the self-questioning sing-song style to this!

I absolutely relate, soul drifter. This is a good poem of despair and holding on to something you probably ought to give up. That said, is the reason I relate big time.
