People often told me-
There are those who need the words,
You write when you are thinking,
Your writings must be heard...

But they were wrong, I'm thinking
For something vibrant went...
After I had published,
That same poetry in print.

For poetry, like heartbeats,
Counts only in the now.
One can't live on yesterdays,
At least I don't know how.

Like life, it loses freshness.
And I fear becomes blase`,
For here and now are all we have,
The same with what we say.

So I will write, then crumple,
The things I've written down,
And like the things of yeasterday,
I'll toss them to the ground.

The only thing worth reading-
Is what is on our minds,
The searcher keeps on seeking,
And the seeker never finds.

I want to applaud this one, John.  Thank you for sharing them before you crumple them up.  My world would be a tiny bit more empty without your poetry.  This is true.

I think certain people are driven to write for a reason. In my opinion the world would be a pretty sad and lonely place without music, stories, poems etc. I hope you continue to share your writing with all of us who enjoy and look forward to your posts.

We can't live on yesterdays... but they can enrich our nows. And your words always enrich my day!

Gunslinger,
my ole friend

I've been reading your poetry
for nigh on, 14 years

back at old Spyder's Empire,
then at the board of "Grace and Insanity"

now here.

and I must say, what you've just written is a masterpiece. The best thing I've ever seen you write.

I read the first stanza here and thought...
stop, that is your poem, right there, your statement.

"People often told me-
There are those who need the words,
You write when you are thinking,
Your writings must be heard..."

Then I read on and it got better.
How it warms my heart to hear you say stop living in the past.
because, you're writing has mostly been that

you don't need to
this, what you just wrote,
that is your voice, your thoughts, your opinions on the hear and now.
Your wisdom

THAT is your voice!
Well done my friend.
Sincerely,
Brad

John, I enjoyed your poem and your thoughts in the now about the now, but please don't crumple your poems and throw them away.  You need to keep them as I am sure many of us here do save your poems to re-read.  I hear you - and yes, the now, is most important, but it built on the lessons and memories of the past and the promise of and steering towards the future.  I read this poem about the now as being written IN the now and that it is more about a change of attitude than a rejection of the past - and that it is not a decision cast in stone.  Can you even imagine not remembering your rodeo days???  I am sure that we could count on one hand - perhaps even one finger - the number of people here who ride/rode in rodeos - OK, I rode 2 oxen in one fun rodeo competition, but that doesn't count - you did that for a career which makes me ever green and evergreen with envy.  Whilst poetry doesn't sell (here in South Africa anyway), to have your poetry in print is something very special and can't possibly diminish how lovely your poetry is and I am sure that those who own your book are very happy to have it.
