The gentle breezes blowing
Stir mesquite and cottonwood-
As I'm resting in my saddle in the shade.
A puncher's life is all I've known,
I must confess it's good-
The best decision that I ever made.

Out in California,
Among the rocky peaks
I did daywork out on the Muleshoe L.
Along with Red Ken Bowen-
My luck has come in streaks,
And in those days it wasn't going well.

From there to Arizona,
I found the Bar T Bar-
A hundred thousand acres of the best.
I lived there in the bunkhouse,
And beneath the western stars,
Ten bucks a day, and found, you know the rest.

But my cowboy days are over-
I ride the range no more.
A pickup is the way I get around.
But memories do haunt me,
How they make my old heart sore,
For a livelihood,
A long, long way from town.

I think about the mountains,
And the Painted Desert days,
Of wrecks, and binds, and times I have been throwed-
And about the old time cowhands-
The cane we used to raise,
And them old boys you can't see from the road.

I love reading about those days, John, and hearing the stories that you tell.  Glad you didn't leave.

Always enjoy the stories about your lifestyle, John. But for the story tellers and poets I guess some of us would never know anything about how cowboys lived.

As usual, I loved it.  Not just for the picture, but for the way you tell it.  You add so much with your use of language.
