Moorland Grave

A ghostly mist, a moorland dawn
Too soon for sun to light the dale
And on the barbs where wool once torn
Could jackdaws silent tell a tale

The lonely heights where peat abounds
Secrets hidden in silent grave
No cross to mark, the dark surrounds
No calling card, a Jack or Knave

And surely as the sun will rise
Each shadow grows just reaching out
Each afternoon the curlew cries
Soon night will come there is no doubt

And dark descends to hush the land
And secret souls at stars will gaze
And moorland stone then turns to sand
And could my mind these thoughts erase.

You have a certain way of writing that I admire. It is the rhyming, of course, but even better it is the subjects you write about that I find interesting.

Exquisite, Michael.  Whispers of Heathcliffe territory and some of my favourite poets and novelists of the last century.  I enjoy your poetry very much.

My thoughts turned to Saddleworth, a place that still invokes sadness in spite of the time that's passed.

Your poetry is not only impressive, it is tactile...I can feel the atmosphere of Moorland when I read this..

A murder methinks, and then the dumping of the body? Only the curlews know for sure.

I can see Holmes and Watson trudging across the peat..

"What say you, Watson?....Don't know Holmes,
Perhaps the poet that wrote about this knows more than he has written?"

poem was written on the train between Manchester and York. Correct Grinch, Saddlewoth moor, and there is a thought in there relating to the tragic circumstances of the 'Moors murders' 1963/65 and the poor boy keith Bennett whose body has never been found
