Black Diamonds

The smoke lingered, its entrails whispered
As if it had a tale to tell
And on the streets beneath the yellow lights
The shadows moved as if alive
Whilst rain, just a pictured reflection
Transformed the feelings of the day
The slow dying heartbeat not transfused
Commuter steam trains, home too late
The last barge, no quay or open gates
The gallows of the cotton hoist
From the hall, the sound of mournful brass
The tally man and shaft now gone
Dust within the lungs, a man still proud
Just coal stained tears, a coal dust shroud

Yet another work of poetry on the plight of the working man. Impressed mightily with the first two lines of this poem.
