Innocent Wish

I have a distant memory
Half dream, half real, it lingers
Reaching for some clarity
Like grasping clouds with fingers

Blind to all around me
Ears blocked to truth and lies
Fingers of thought surrounding
Draw the memory to my eyes

~

I’m standing in a meadow
That time will soon erase
Where, sunlight kissed, the flowers glow
In gentle warmth yet chaste

The vision of a wishing well
Shimmers in my view
A faded sign still foretells
“Your wishes can come true”

For but one simple penny
That I strangely find at hand
It offers lives of plenty
And other things more grand

I think of all the things I knew
And all the things I've wanted
So much that I wish wasn’t true
By so much I am haunted

I wish now for my innocence
In that vision in a dream
I stand there waiting in suspense;
Then the memory rips its seams

~

I did not see but still I know
The well granted me truth
Once you let innocence go
It’s lost, just like your youth

So just for now I’ll stop and sigh
At what I cannot change
And hope that I can dream to fly
No matter what my age
