From time to time I travel to-
The land from which I sprung.
And travel to old houses,
Where I lived when I was young.

I drive the dusty country roads,
I walked when just a kid…
Nostalgically I reminisce,
Those foolish things we did.

I stop by cemeteries-
Where rest my fallen dead.
And read the aging markers-
That guard their sleeping heads.

I guess old age took the most,
Illness claimed a few…
One died from a shotgun blast,
And car wrecks did for two.

Call me morbid, if you wish:
To me it’s hallowed ground,
And the only place upon the globe,
My family can be found.

Sole survivor? Just about,
And my time’s drawing near.
There’s not a thought of dying-
That causes me to fear.

South Texas is the land I love-
Though often did I roam,
But every road I’ve traveled-
Did finally take me home.

I still dream o one house we lived in when I was little.  I fell in love with the dormer/window seat in my bedroom.  Love this, John.

Though we moved around a lot I still think of Salem, Oregon as home. I understand the attachment here. Great poem.

I have a thing for the cemetary too... The only people who truly knew me through my first 40 years reside there.  Loneliness isn't in being alone, loneliness is alone in being.  I share your loneliness, friend.

If you're morbid, I am, too!

This really touches me, GS... I think you've written what many of us feel and done so beautifully!

I was happy to see your name in the list of poems.  I haven't been around for a while.  You never disappoint.  Perfect meter, wonderful visuals, and emotional impact.
