Waiting In The Wings

Waiting in the wings,
I packed up all my things
truths I have stripped bare,
night on night
scrap poems I've left there,
with such reckless care
slipped out of sight
in the sleeve of my favorite Nick Drake record
Five Leaves Left she's never heard
so I told her he was Elliot Smith of the '70s
ooh she stared up at me,
and cracked out an easy smile
she had waiting in the wings all the while
such an elegant gypsy Frisco style
we talked all the 29 miles...

Waiting in the wings,
as the steel guitar sings
shrugged off sleep without a care
day by day
stumble through life with geeky flare,
cool as a Frigidaire
my sanity so frayed
but I am soaring in the sky like a breeze
when she sings my songs to me
my heart is dancing and it longs to be
playing her like a Strat,
just like Jimi Hendrix in love
I've been waiting in the wings red as blood
and Van Morrison beltin' out her song
we sang it 'till the dawn...

Hidden in these second hand store-bought things
my sad little songs jingle on rusty guitar strings
streaming across the pillow like a map of the moon
this daisy chain of romance spirals down too soon
oh honey child,
don't let the sun cross the body's outline marked in chalk
stay groovy and wild,
don't say the summer birds will outgrow the need to talk
to me
set free
all that you can't carry through this life
hidden in the wings...

Waiting in the wings,
I picked up the loose string
admissions I have laid bare,
wrong or right
shed tears I've left there,
with such reckless care
slipped into the night
in the rhyme of a perfect Neil Finn song
'Private Universe' she's never heard
so I sang into her wide open ears
ooh the melody switches gears
I cracked out a ringing chord
love's been waiting in the things that I adore
stolen from a gypsy Frisco store
we stalked all the 29 floors
to see
what she
could possibly carry through her soul
like a hidden moon grows full...

And as the steel guitar sings
I can see you...
waiting in the wings

I hope you are putting music to the songs you have posted, including this one.
This is really good.
