I am crouched, in this middle-space of why
warmed by the soft friction
of your words against the page of me
to the core of me, and back.
What more of this moment
than the profoundness of a back
arching into verbs and the
staccato of punctuation.

If across the space of miles can stretch
a potential sweetly soft
caress, with the roundness of vowels
on the rough of my tongue;
then how is it that the language
fails me so utterly
so completely - when caught in the fascination
of your breath captured in a phrase.

I stammer, a fool with words - as if
the command of speech were mine

There is an islandness about you,
solidarity and intrepid resolve
and warmth in words that wind their way
through my mind, voice purring
along planes and valleys
such that I can but fragment at the impact
of lines met in pitch, lost
in the in-between

Ah, it is the wonder of the written word, that it can excite us or damn us. The hodgepodge of unrecognizable phrases and words soon are understood because of the familiarity of the utterer. Loved this poem, Nicole. It struck close to home.

damn that purring! It will ultimately be our downfall...I'm sure of it!

This is fantastic, Nicole~

I feel this... every time I read or hear words breathed and fail miserably at expressing what they make me feel... and can only hope the in-between is understood. *S*

Excellent write!!

Oh my Nicole, this is absolutely lovely. I think your descriptiveness of language and words has left me without enough words of my own to adequately say how wonderful this was! Much enjoyed.

Best wishes,
/Kit

I've asked myself that before too, just not so eloquently. Marvelous write.

Your "In-Between",  is one nice definition of a love song, in my estimation.  Love this verse.
This is a heartfelt write; beautiful.

(Without it would be obbligato, an essential part but as the lesser.)

Enjoyed the read, Nicole.

This is by far the best poem I've ever read about the power of the written word.  Words that by no means have failed you I might add.
