Listening to every heart

Do you know rain?

Is rain from above something that simply
spoiled your day of a planned picnic,
or a deluge that dampened your spirits
because for a brief time, the sun disappeared?

Did you wax the car and now, cannot show it off
for fear of spots?

Or is it more?

Do you see it as a washing of air,
clearing away smoke from eyes, or as
a last clinging to stems
before absorbed by earth,
as if it were a heavy tear
being pulled unwillingly
by gravity…

do you feel its weight in your heart?

Do you see the drops dance in puddles,
looking long and hard behind the romance of it all,
embracing this moment of quiet solitude,
turning to yours, saying,
“this is our moment of quiet”
as the tapping resonates upon the roof,
barely coming to your ear

beneath the morning sheets?

Do you know rain?

Do not see the drizzle as mere drops
that splash your windows after their washing,
but know that somewhere
an angel is crying for joy
as it welcomes home a soul.

Then, you will know rain.

Interesting takes on the phenomenon of rain, Sunshine. As for moi, I give rain its due and think of it as a refreshing of the planet. I also feel peaceful for some reason I can't explain.

I never thought about rain in so many ways, loved this...still in all I must say I'm going to have to agree with the simplicity of JP and that peaceful feeling rain brings for some strange reason.

I've always loved the rain. There's an energy to it that just calls to me. The freshness of it's passing has no match. Your poem was beautiful and deeply emotional. Thanks for sharing. Peace.

I actually love the rain, I find it inspiring.

Very very nicely reasoned in this piece Karilea. A fine fine poetic touch of diversified perspective.

beautiful imagery and thoughts. Love these lines especially.

"Do not see the drizzle as mere drops
that splash your windows after their washing,
but know that somewhere
an angel is crying for joy
as it welcomes home a soul." Fine writing.

I know the rain. It's the greening of the earth, and an everpresent symphony here for seven months out of the year where I live.   Sometimes it is a gray weight, and the tympani is a percussion that moves mountains.  Here, people use umbrellas only occasionally.  They have webbed feet!  LOL  I do miss the sun in winter, pine for it, but sometimes there comes a luminosity on the mountains through the drizzle that transports me into another world and wreaths of white crown the peaks in early morning or lie like shrouds in the silence.  It is not unusual to see thunderheads on fire over the ocean and watch the white caps become dragon scales billowing beneath the gulls circling in the rain. You actually take notice when a blue patch of sky escapes the cloud cover.  I know I am the interloper as I wait for the sun to mine turquoise waves, to turn the silver lakes into sapphire and bejewel the landscape with wildflowers, or to make the dew twinkle on the grass like diamonds in my backyard. But that's winter.  In summer, there is a wild kind of breathing that comes just before the rain bursts upon the earth. You can smell it as it whips around your face.  The sky is a palette of God's fingerpaint and you can hear Him sighing. Yes, I know the rain, as well as my own tears.  This is a gift this morning, Sunshine.  Thank you!

Klassy...what you said...is better than what I wrote.

And to everyone else? Merry Christmas...survive the holidays in poetic style...smile warmly....it keeps others thinking...and give freely...of your love, and heart, and class, just like the lady above did.

She made my Christmas!
