where does it go
the love
the passion
how does it occur
sleeping with backs turned
to each other
or
separate room even
how does that happen
bills
someone says money matters
changes things
kids
yeah, the children demand more of you
that means less for
her
or him
life hangs a yoke around your neck
called
the yoke of responsibility
sounds nice
yep has a nice ring to it
hear that phrase a lot
from talking heads
owning up to responsibility
I concur
responsibility is a big deal
so!
money, kids, responsibility
means losing interest in what used to be
your everything
lust
couldn't wait to entertain lust
you'd do it in the car
bathroom
even in the woods
lust and love and romance
takes a backseat to . . .
dependability
accountability
making the mortgage
bailing the kids out of trouble
afraid they're gonna go
psycho on you
pressure in this modern age
unheard of before
gadgets to make life easier
why then
is it harder
huh?
you join forces with the spouse
keep everything above water
except the feelings
between the two of you
long silences
go out of the way to not touch
the other
fiery passion gone
maybe each of you
cast wandering eyes
to neighbors across the street
beginning of the end

Good question...
and usually the answers
are quite painful
and complex.

You are correct, Sunshine, it is complex and painful, otherwise most people would overcome it. Thank you for being here.

It's kind of like a garden, I think.

If you just rely on perennials, you'll still have wildflowers, but if you want a garden that grows something nourishing, you have to save the seeds of the best fruit to plant again, and again and again.

That's just too much work for some.

I'm not an expert. The archives are full of my marital miseries. But I am one stubborn sonova...

And so is he.

One more thing? Reasonable expectations--one should not plant onions and get angry when that's what one reaps.

The whole blasted thing can be wiped out by an early (or late) frost, too.

I'll shaddup--and just say:

"It's Complicated."

Where does it go? Thats a tough question to ask, and its even harder to deal with the answer. Enjoyed.

Serenity, sorry I am so late getting back here. You have the right idea I think, comparing marriage to a garden (gotta watch out for those bitter weeds) and all that goes into cultivating, tenderly coaxing life out of the ground and keeping the weeds (bitter weeds too) out of the area that will suck all the oxygen from the plants.

On the other hand I agree. It friggin' complicated.

Thank you for being here.

Thanks Martie, and yes we can all relate each in our own special degrees.

I believe that love matures beyond the  physical relm and blossoms into something different.  Sure that means more  responsibilties but love does not remain in a romantic honeymoon stage forever.  When love becomes unconditional, isn`t that a wonderful thing?

Bitter weeds, grubs, aphids, assorted mold and fungi, fickle weather... and still sometimes the soil just gets depleted.

(I think I just depressed myself again.)

*sigh*

When I get love figured out...

Interesting perusal of an old subject that all of us questions as some time or another.  It is sad when there is no touch, though, for whatever reason.  Being taken for granted is poison and apathy will finish a relationship off.

Serenity Blaze's comment is wonderful!

Enjoying the read and all the comments. It is a universal happening I guess. But those of us who stick with it reap the harvest.

Yeah, you're right, Klassy Lassy. Love! Who in their right mind can figure it out.

Yes, latearrival, I am always amazed at those who actually get to have their marriage vows renewed on their fiftieth anniversary like mine did.

I am a firm believer that love is the essence of living and an intelligent entity we must be aware of in order to keep time with it. ...and yes, our poems do seem to complement one another. It's the talent we are given and must use in order to keep it.

It's the age of fast food. We want it and we want it now..if not we'll drive somewhere else. Instant gratification and satisfaction are what we're told to expect.

Years ago we were told to expect to work hard and make do with what we had.

Now everything is made to toss away - even relationships. It's sad.

Poet deVine, you have said what needed to be said, and I one hundred percent agree with you, and have said the same thing on numerous occasions. Thanks for stopping by and clearing the air so to speak.

Enjoyed the read, Jerry.  Everything in life just "goes".  I don't try to analyze it anymore because most times the reason isn't made known until long after the fact.

Yeah, I know, Helen, but that's what poets do, they push the envelope a little nudge here, a little twink there . . . I think Poet deVine pretty much has a handle on it.

Thank you very much for reading my poem and your input, it is greatly appreciated.

Where does IT go? Well, it's still there, just in a different form. I think you just have to have a healthy respect for the other and an understanding that life is change. You have to go with the flow and be flexible. I also know that if my eye wonders, it's because it is rolling across the table after being slapped upside the head for my indiscretion. I try not to suffer too many blows.   Another quality write. Peace.

"after being slapped upside the head for my indiscretion."

I'm afraid THAT would make my eyes wander even more.

You're right, of course, IT is manageable, but most people allow their personal idiosyncrasies to drive their emotions to their utter disappointment.

Thanks Andrew. Appreciate it.

"after being slapped upside the head for my indiscretion."

I'm quite sure that would make my eyes wander a bit more.

But you are correct, IT evolves and to maintain IT we must evolve also. the problem begins when people begins to allow their idiosyncrasies to rule the day. Big trouble then.

Thanks you Andres, I appreciate your presence here.
