And it came to pass in that day
When the future and past collided
With a crescendo theretofore unheard,
That noise become the order of the realm.
Reason was arrested, beaten and executed!
It mattered not what you thought—
Thought was then a forbidden art . . .
It was noise that mattered—the louder one shouted,
The more he was unheard, and thence exalted
Among the weaker voices . . .

The poet—a fugitive from the clamor,
Sought refuge in the high wilderness, and there
In the silence of the night-chilled stones,
He surrendered his heart and mind to the depths
Of the light speckled darkness . . .

In these times of so much calumny and strident invective, the well tempered heart seeks solitude and, thankfully, it can be found.

WOW! I haven't read anything like that in quite a long time. There isn't a single line I would point out as being better than the rest, for the sum is certainly a far greater thing. You are truly the silent man within this piece. I bow to you and yours. Peace.

We certainly are in a culture where shouting the loudest and the longest is a measure of your productivity. No matter the message, just be loud, be loud often and the message will be heard by a populace who have a difficult time putting two sentences together as gospel.

By the way, Art, I see you are from Arkansas. I am also, but haven't lived there for many years.

You've outdone yoursef here, Art. I especially love that last line.

Whenever I return home to America, I feel bombarded by noisy commentators that greet me while I am waiting for a connecting flight home. Do I really need to know about Linsey Loham and how many days she has to spend in jail?  After 20 hours of traveling silence is sweet.

I keep coming back to read this, so back to the top you go for others to discover.
