Each year I get together with the same friends for Thanksgiving. My job is to bring a poem encapsulating the year. This is my offering for 2010

2010 was quite a year, at least that's what they say.
Our college sports teams took a dump, forgetting how to play.
The Dolphins live on ice cream cones. That's all that they can lick
And the Heat show that with superstars they still look pretty sick.

No hurricanes came by to call. For that we say hooray.
Perhaps hot air from Washington is pushing them away.
The voters showed the country that their favorite drink is tea
And New Orleans damaged once again, thanks largely to BP.

Waves of oily terror came with their unending flow
But enough about illegals coming up from Mexico.
'undocumented immigrants' they're called. That's quite a twist.
Drug dealers must be, I suppose, unlicensed pharmacists!

Although for many folks, the future's looking pretty bad
I'd like to share with you the stroke of fortune that I had.
I'm not sure how it happened, maybe some celestial plan
But 2010's the year that I became a wealthy man!

I never knew that I was rich. I live on beans and spam
But president Obama has advised me that I am.
And, being such, I'm privileged to pay the bills of those
Who sit at home and watch their tv's....Oprah, I suppose.

Since we have all become so rich, I and other voters
decided we would go ahead and purchase General Motors.
I went down to the dealership to get a brand new car.
I let them know I owned the place but didn't get too far.

This being rich is not the honor I thought it would be.
Everybody has their hand out, looking straight at me.
Obama says he's sorry but it has to be that way.
Sometimes I think I'd like to kick him in his Fannie Mae!

But, anyway, I have free health care. I'm a lucky man!
I'm going to get all the help the panels say I can.
They told me I could keep my doctor. Hey, that sounded fine
He and I met last week in the unemployment line.

So that's the way it is, my friends. The future isn't clear
But, unlike many others, we survived another year.
And as I stand here with good friends at this year's turkey bash
They say I'm rich and so I am....I just ain't got no cash!!!

You frost the truth with humor - and I laugh and cry a bit too.

Happy Thanksgiving, Michael.  I give thanks for people like you in my life.

Sir Balladeer: This one certainly weren't no turkey... though it be stuffed with the truth and nicely spiced with humor. I think your wallet looks a lot like mine, my friend. I hope this holiday finds you well, if but a little more impoverished. Peace.

This is so well done Michael.
A satirical achievement of poetic merit.
The truth is scary sometimes.

Superb writing!

Thank you, Denise. No  doubt Obama will follow the tradition of pardoning the White House bird at the final moment. Afte all, enough turkeys got their heads chopped off this year!

If ever I wanted to see a tally.
Of the merits of our current year.
I need not stress or even rally.
I have but to look to Balladeer.

Excellent!! I look forward to next year!!

Michael, amazing humor, so tongue in cheek
I wish I could have heard you speak.
In these rough times, you bequeath us a smile,
Amusing your friends in stellar Mack Style!

Your charmed eye to irony is refined to an art,
But your measure of treasure is mined from your heart
The health of your wealth when push comes to shove
Can not be depleted because you are loved!

I am richer for knowing you, too.
