A lonely man in a lonely cell
Thought of his love, Marie
That's all he had, just memory
Well, that and his glorious tree.

It was huge and full of leaves
A blessing unto him each day
In weather fair or most foul
Took his burden for to weigh.

From a tiny sprout it did grow
Into a majestic full-fledged oak
He watched as the years passed
It grew, he believed it spoke.

In spring the tree, full and ripe
Marie's swollen belly he saw
With a child that did not live
A barren and bald tree in fall.

O'er the many joyless years
Stared out his window to see
Life on parade in front of him
What he was missing was key.

Such a sound he never heard
Trilling of birds nesting there
Of course little ones came soon
To carry on for they are heirs.

Not like Marie carrying child
The birdies hatched out fine
As he watched they did fly
From the nest as 'twas design.

Lovers came to use the tree
Carve I Love You on its limb
He, handsome and rock hard
She, delicate, and oh, so trim.

The seasons came and went
He grew into morose man
Tree grew into a friendly thing
He begin telling it his plans.

O'er time he understood
It was the tree made life fun
In a tiny cell he could smile
It took his pain, he had none.

It lent its shade in afternoon
To freshen his fevered brow
Life worth another breath
The tree was cleansing thou.

This morning the men came
Took saws, killed it like sin
The man, by afternoon ill
Died, crying for his friend.

I guess I do tell sad tales often. Too often I suppose.

Sad story Jerry
Amazing what people will cling to when they lose a loved one.

Good stuff!
