Running away
From the loneliness
Inside
Covering many a
Painful mile
Searching
For that
Hole to fill
Wisdom wondering
Better late
Than never
Perhaps that
Lonely longing
Is me
Missing me

I don't know, but reading this put me in mind of a song called "Hitchhiker," by the band Legend Heart I will have on the back cover of my new novel, "Three Corners." Your poem has the same lonesome, wishful tenor to it that "Hitchhiker" has. If you want to listen to the song you can go here and scroll down a little. It will be on the right hand side of the screen. http://www.myspace.com/boltonjp

Here are the lyrics.

HITCH HIKER

MIDNIGHT WINDS ARE BLOWING FREE
ACROSS THE OPEN SKY
LEAVES AND FLOWERS TREES AND RAIN
JUST SEEM TO BLOW ON BY

MOUNTAIN ROADS AHEAD OF ME
LOOK SO STEEP AND LONG
SNOW IS FALLING HEAVENLY DOWN
AS THE PATH IS WINDING ON

(BRIEF INSTRUMENTATION)

SHELTER MANY MILES AWAY
NOT A CAR IN SIGHT
SLEEPING UNDER NATURE'S CAVES
HEARING SOUNDS OF NIGHT

WILDERNESS IS NOT A STRANGER
BEEN HITCHIN' FOR MANY YEARS
RUNNING FROM MYSELF I GUESS
OR HIDING FROM MY FEARS
x
JUST HOW DOES ONE DECIDE
WHERE THEY WANT TO BE
WHICH IS THE PASSAGE TO
THE PERFECT PLACE FOR ME
IF SOMEHOW I COULD ASK THE STARS
TO TELL MY DESTINY
MAYBE THESE TIRED EYES WOULD SEE

(SOLO)

MY JOURNEY'S LONG AND EMPTY
DESTINATIONS UNKNOWN
NO COMMUNICATION
LETTERS TELEPHONE

ALL ROADS MUST, LEAD TO SOMEWHERE
BUT WHERE IT'S HARD TO SAY
SO IT'S ON, TO ENDLESS VOYAGES
AS DARKNESS TURNS TO DAY..

Hmm...I like this. The idea that one is lonely, only because one has not found one's self. Enjoyed this.

MIssing ourselves can be very disheartening. We need to find ourselves again but we don't know exactly where to look. We need to retrace our steps until we see where we lost ourselves and then do whatever's necessary to get ourselves back...so who says life is easy??

Speaking of songs, this one reminds me of a Rod McKuen poem sung by Sinatra.

There's a few more lonesome cities
That I'd like to see
While the winds of wandering
Are still inside of me.

There's a few more lonesome valleys
That I'd like to know
Bridge or two I'd like to cross
Few more oats to sow.

Maybe when I've done it all
Seen all there is to see
I'll find out I just cannot
Run away from me.

But as long as trains keep running
Restless man I'll be
And there's a few more lonesome cities
That I'd like to see.

Then there's that age old classic that explains where we all are in the end....

Gilbert O'Sullivan's famous words..

In a little while from now,
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promised myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower,
And climbing to the top,
Will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it's like when your shattered
Left standing in the lurch, at a church
where people 're saying,
"My God that's tough, she stood him up!
No point in us remaining.
We may as well go home."
As I did on my own,
Alone again, naturally

To think that only yesterday,
I was cheerful, bright and gay,
Looking forward to, but who wouldn't do,
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down,
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch,
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt,
Talk about God in His mercy
For if He really does exist
Why did He desert me
In my hour of need?
I truly am indeed,
Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that
There are more hearts
Broken in the world
That can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?

(instrumental break)

Alone again, naturally

Now looking back over the years,
And what ever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old,
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn't understand, why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart
So badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally

Alone again, naturally

Might sound a bit down but it's the dang truth and that's all there is to it..

Great ideas and verse...EBM  write on!

One of the great ones for sure, Eric. Johnny Mathis sang that one brilliantly.

In me you see a man alone
Drinking up Sundays and spending them alone
Don't talk to strangers
someone might be kind
And muddle up your mind - McKuehn

Like EBM is writing, sometimes we just never get it, like

Harry Chapin's words

Well, I hear you are a painter now
Though you're almost halfway through
You pulled a pallet knife, you cut away a wife
And you started something new

But it was not the strife of married life
That ordained what you would do
A quick look back through your history
Shows the same things goading you

It's just like you to try painting
Because you're color blind
Each time you conquer something
That's the time you change you're mind

And now your new preoccupations
Give you your handicap to start
Yes you're happiest when you're chasing clouds
With a halfway broken heart

Paint a picture of yourself
Let the images flash past
Don't weep on watercolors,
Make this moment last
Paint the kid with restless eyes
Yeah, the way you looked back then
'Cause the man keeps getting frightened
When the boy's not born again

I remember how you led us
Back when we all were kids
And that fact that you were older
Made us copy what you did

The day you bought that cheap guitar
We all fell into line
We got hooked on music
But you drifted off in time

So, I can see you at your easel
Splay legged there you stand
And your eyes are darting back and forth
Brush flashing in your hand
You're reaching always for that dream
You need to make you real
Leaning in a heavy wind
That no one else can feel

That's what makes the time spent here special......

Love it all...

Eric
