It's no use beating around the bush
when the rattle of self-pity chains
disturbs a moment of silence
because in the end there's nought to be done
but bring in the proverbial big guns.

I know well of determined control
that locks a scream in the throat
and keeps the murmur of love
silent within the eyes
and yet within that concept
I'm battling the rattle of self-pity chains
that disturbs my moments of silence.

The chains, of course, are affixed to the poles
of abject stupidity
firmly set in the concrete of
a most illustrious illusion
easily shattered to dust
by the force of free-will intent.

I also know how intent destroys
one end of those rattling chains
but in fear of untimely demise
big guns always shoot away from the source.

So the rattle of self-pity chains
precedes and follows the flow of life
until face to face with the wall of self
built with the bricks of eccentric ego
easily brought down with a hammer.

And so when enthralled with this all and more
only love overcomes the rattle of chains
because it's well known to be ...
one of those strong silent types!

I can relate to this, Helen, I feel the same way at times but you say it better.

Thanks, Ida.  Just had to capture the moment in words before it leaves because it certainly will leave.

I guess the self-pitying virus can attack us all at any given moment, but most of us weather the storm without giving in to it. It never solves anything, only causes you to go into depression and then you have big time trouble. Nice write, Helen.

And that was my yesterday, Helen.

You say it so well...I could only feel it.

Lovely write.

Love shatters self-pity. Love it. Enjoyed this.

Thanks JerryPat and M!  I landed in self-pity through a very stupid act on my part which caused a lot of pain - already better though.

I try not to wollow in that puddle all too often. But as Jerry points out, we've all been there, done that.

I would just like to say that I am never let down by the quality and content of what you post. I enjoy your style and the poise by which you accept what ever life sends your way. I have no doubt that you are an inspiration to many, including myself, within and beyond these blue halls. I bow to you and yours. Peace.

Thank you so much, Andrew.  I'm most touched by you taking the time to comment as you have done.  It means a lot.

Someone once referred to me as a "timeless" person in that I would fit into any era.     I think he was trying to say what you have said but couldn't quite express it any other way.  I had to laugh though.

All is quiet here.  The self-pity chains have stopped rattling.

Thanks again.
Regards
Helen

I think he just noticed you weren't wearing a watch in your picture. Though, I think the idea of you being "timeless" is a fairly right notion. Glad to hear the chains are silent. Peace.

Could be because I don't wear a watch anymore but in my experience it's not something that most would even notice.

Did you know that some people think that a watch slows down a person's energetic "vibrations"?  It's actually not true though.  If we're meant to "speed up" then we will.  The benefit of that speed up is, however, dubious because it opens the mind and heart when perhaps it's easier to live with them closed.

Think I've replaced a rattle with a roll.

When I worked in radio, I wore a watch all the time. A necessary part of the trade. However, since becoming a teacher I haven't worn one. I live my life by the bells. Just call me Quasimotto.

One of my favorite scenes in Crocodile Dundee is when Dundee and his friend Walt are trying to set up a time and place to meet. When they finally settle on the specifics, Dundee asks Walt, "What day is it today?" After he tells him, Walt turns to himself and says, "Doesn't know, doesn't care." I kind of get that way during vacation. It's a nice feeling.

We all suffer from the blah blah blue bees.  But as your last stanza points out love overcomes those chains of pity.  Nicely thought out and presented.
