A Giant Step

To my daughter upon deciding to have brain surgery
to relieve the symptoms of Parkinson’s

It’s a giant step I’m taking to relieve a heavy load
It’s a little step toward freedom as I stumble down the road
it’s a chance to re-establish little tasks a woman does
it’s a ticket for a journey back to life the way it was

If this allows me time to live the things I’ve not yet lived
and give without exemption everything I have to give
if I shall be remembered through a grandson’s youthful eyes
for all that I’ve accomplished and not for my demise

If I be judged not merely  for doing what I can
but rather just for being the person thst I am
then I will have accomplished what I’ve tried so hard to do
I will have lessoned fears and doubts that dwell inside of you

I will have strengthened your resolve, diminished your regret
created special memories thet you never will forget
then as the storms of life approach that never seem to cease
I will sit by winter windows in profound and silent peace

I learned about your surgery from Nan, from the posting board.  I hope that your giant step forward is successful and that you continue to submit poems for us.  God bless.

The courage it takes to go through a
process such as this is all wrapped up
in one name - Lady Santos.

I'm so very proud of you and as you
recover, you will find much more to
be thankful for!

Much love, my dear.
