It’s the seeds I’ve sown that now must grow
in the fields of my own consciousness
but first I need to amble back
to where they first were made.

And it seems that history must beget
awareness of the natural
for the toddler, teen, young adult years,
aren’t spent making seed packets.

We don’t seek out the good and best
or shop in all supply chains
but acquire from inbred tendencies
and simply scatter who we are.

If youth could know how grows a seed
jungles would grant easy passage
and weeds would bow to roses, me,
in deference to the beautiful.

But jungles now have turned to stone
and weeds proliferate the beds
where once I turned from this to that
ungrounded in belief.

Unchanged is history’s landscape
until the time of new beginnings
where from the shelf of mindfulness
I choose which seeds to grow.

But beware the ground that swallows seeds
and plays the game of make-believe
for this land is here to hide the truth
and shock the grower with results.

And in the concept “sow to reap”
it doesn’t matter plant, replant,
because sooner, later, here or there,
weeds will bow to me!

An unkempt garden is a fitting metaphor. Thanks for a very thoughtful write. And, yes, it is literally our duty or task to make some decent sense of it all, best we can and come what may.

A lovely poem, Helen, with a lot of thought and wisdom behind it.

Thank you, easy1 and Ida.  One tries but really at the end of the day nothing makes any sense.
