in the shadows

Where is my mother's milk of whiskey?
I like JD straight though it gives my lungs a cough;
I can't complain it's just the stain of too many deeds that paid me cash.
I like Everclear and sweetened beer with taste of apples over ice,
and any wine when I've the time to dim the lights of shadowed past.
Don't let my smile fool you ‘cause the outcome's still the same;
I am a wizard and I'm too old to be ashamed.

I remember Winter's storms in numbing ice of separation,
sweet elation stolen precious in brief moments of aware;
I remember Spring's soft nights lulled by moonlit surf,
in waves rhythmic crashing surge of living foam;
I remember Summer's skin raw against Chaco walls
hot enough to blister souls in yearning's burning memories;
I miss you most of all when Autumn rolls around,
swollen sound of emptiness drowning out my thoughts
with survival as the least of my concerns;
sitting here wrapped in solace awaiting drizzled dawn,
how sad it is my whiskey can not afford its ice.

When I was young I kept a bag packed
just in case a contract came along,
unexpectedly;
873 should be just a number not unlike any other
it should not have souls attached to it,
yet it does for me;
I am too old now to be free,
completely free;
I've been a wizard since I learned to think
and understand
when my own mother called me Satan's spawn.

My one regret,
had I to count them like angels on my hand,
is never having courage to explain my life
in ways you'd understand.

Maybe there are some of us who understand more than you think, Dear Wizard.

  Everything has a soul attached it seems. Some perhaps we don't bother with, but others we can't help but feel..

always a journey and always a pleasure to read you sir

I shan't claim to understand, but I did enjoy the stroll through the seasons.

A Poet always speaks through the soul and you do it incredibly well, dear Charlie.
