Heaven and Hell - As Dark As They Get

She`s a woman with an angel`s face
Who happens to be in the wrong place
She sinned with me the most pleasant of sins
I cannot deny that I have striven
To be forgiven.  But what the cost
When I think of the one I have lost?

So yet again, St. Peter I beseech
With all unhappy hearers within reach
St. Peter, needless to say, is much annoyed
Cause I`m short on tact, you would say devoid
I prefer the short life, void of all rest
To the eternal and the ever blest

I shout at St. Peter to open his gate
To which his eyes reply, `You know her fate.`
If only I could meet her, sing to her
If only my soul were like the wind and could fly to her
St. Peter sighs, `This is a lonely place for one like you.
Nothing can be done.  There is no avenue to pursue.`

The Heavens may rejoice at the birth of another morning
But my love will never know
Not when she`s wandering terrible fields of waste and blight
Where only misery grows
The angels know I`m steeped in misery and speak not of Hell
Or of broken hearts or lost souls

St. Peter, You spare my feelings
But it`s right I should know

Do....

Worms gnaw and devour flesh
Behind closed doors?

Do....

Wicks drown in their own wax
Away from the light?

Do....

Inaudible screams gather
In the darkness?

Do....

Half toothless men gnash their teeth
In the depths?

Do....

Lost souls flounder
In a Sea of Blood?

Can....

Redemption exist for her

Behind the shut doors
Away from the light
In the darkness
In the depths
In a Sea of Blood?

St. Peter, will you not answer my questions?
Please.

Love this stark image in your outstanding poem -

"wandering terrible fields of waste and blight
Where only misery grows"

Egads! Gadzooks! If Hell is truly like that, I'm going to try even harder to be a good little girl!

Mind you, I am a firm believer in "redemption"!

Now I remember why I shut the door on hell years ago. It just takes a good writer to jog one's memory.

An interesting read (several times over)... enjoyable in its tragedy of lost love and redemption sought. It reminds me of a movie (can’t remember the title) featuring Robin Williams who seeks to rescue his suicide wife from Hell. Thanks for sharing.
