I was walking through the prison house, just the other day-
It was almost time for leaving when a young man came my way-
His eyes were red from crying, and shiny from his fear
So we sat down at the table, his story I did hear.

He didn't say why he was there, what crime that he had done-
And neither did I ask him, as his story he begun:
He said, My name is Kevin, I am only twenty five-
Said, I know I'll go to Heaven, and I won't long be alive.

Said, It was only weeks ago, my little daughter died
My wife was left there all alone, without me at her side.
He said, She's coming Saturday, to spend the day with me-
They only told me yesterday, that I have HIV.

What can I tell her? What to say? What could I reply?
A boy who’d just begun to live, and now so soon to die...
A girl with heart in shambles, fresh from her daughters tomb
Will now learn that her husband is bound to follow
soon.

Down my cheeks salt tears were flowing, as I took him by the hand-
In my heart compassion growing, for this frightened troubled man.
I said, Son, I have no answers...nor do I understand...
And I cannot give you comfort, but I know of One who can.

He's the One who cleansed the leper, stilled the Sea of Galilee
Then bore Peter on the water, when he bade him, "Come to me".
He's the One who opened blinded eyes, and caused the lame to walk-
Raised the dead and healed the sick, and caused the dumb to talk.

I cannot tell the future- of this, sir, rest assured-
You would not be the first man, the Son of God has cured.
I understand your sorrow, I've pity for your wife,
Take no thought of tomorrow, if you have eternal life.

So trust a loving Savior; on Him cast all your fear-
Console your wife, and tell her, that to God her soul is dear.
Spend your last days in communion with the Lover of your Soul
That you two may be together as the endless ages roll.

We stood, embraced, and went our ways; to our respective ends
And how this tragic tale will end, on that young man depends-
If you'll commit your heart and soul, unto the Lamb of God-
You need not fear your destiny, when they lay you ‘neath the sod.

Excellent writing as usual Gunslinger, and this was a very sad slice of life indeed.
